Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son

Image
We are continuing our series on the supernatural acts of the Lord Jesus while He walked this earth. Today we come to the raising from the dead of a widow’s son: 11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him.  12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out--the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.  13 When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't cry." 14 Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, "Young man, I say to you, get up!"  15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.  16 They were all filled with awe and praised God. "A great prophet has appeared among us," they said. "God has come to help his people."  17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country (Luke 7:11-17...

The Great Faith of a Centurion

Image
Only two times in all four Gospels did Jesus ever compliment people on their faith, and both times it was Gentiles (Non-Jews) who received His praise. The first is found in Matthew 15:28 when a Canaanite woman came to Jesus whose daughter was afflicted by a demon. Her words to Jesus expressed persevering faith. The second person recorded in the Gospels is found in Luke 7, the story of a Roman centurion whose servant was sick: 1 When He had completed all His discourse in the hearing of the people, He went to Capernaum.  2 And a centurion’s slave, who was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die.  3 When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders asking Him to come and save the life of his slave.  4 When they came to Jesus, they earnestly implored Him, saying, “He is worthy for You to grant this to him;  5 for he loves our nation and it was he who built us our synagogue.”  6 Now Jesus  started  on His way with them; and when He was no...

Jesus Heals the Man Born Blind

Image
We are continuing in our daily devotions to focus on the supernatural acts of the Lord Jesus. Today we look at the healing of a man born blind: 1 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.  2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”  3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.  4 As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.  5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”  6 After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes.  7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing (John 9:1-7). In the previous chapter, Jesus stated that He is the great I AM (John 8:58), the name God had told Moses that He was to be called...

Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus

Image
Our focus for the next two weeks of our daily devotions is on the supernatural acts of the Lord Jesus. Today we look at the healing of blind Bartimaeus: 46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging.  47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”  48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”  49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.”  50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.  51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.”  52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed J...

The Faith of a Royal Official

Image
Our focus the last few days and for the next couple of weeks is on the supernatural acts of Jesus, healings, miracles and sign wonders. Today we look at how Jesus healed a person from some distance away: And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.  47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.  48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”  49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”  50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed.  51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.  52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”  53 Then the father realized that this was the exa...

Jesus Heals the Man with the Withered Hand

Image
We are continuing in our series of daily meditations on the topic of the supernatural power of Jesus. Here’s another example of Jesus’ miraculous power: 6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.  8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Get up and stand in front of everyone." So he got up and stood there.  9 Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?"  10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand was completely restored.  11 But they were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus (Luke 6:6-11).  The...

Jesus Heals a Leprous Man

Image
We are continuing our series of short meditations on the supernatural acts of Jesus. Today we come to the healing of a man with leprosy:  12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean."  13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man.  "I am willing,"   he said. "Be clean!" And immediately the leprosy left him.  14 Then Jesus ordered him, "Don't tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them."  15 Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses.  16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed (Luke 5:12-16).  This leper is an example of one with faith in God. The passage tells us that,  “While Jesus w...
